Singing Dune is located in the valley of Ili River, about 2 kilometers from the river Ili on its right bank, between small mountain ranges – the Greater and Lesser Kalkans.
This is one of the main attractions of Altyn Emel Park. It is huge sand dune, overall height – 150m, length – about 3km. Other similar sand dunes in Kazakhstan can be found only in Mangistau region (eg, Sam sands), but the main difference of Semirechye dune that it is capable in dry windy weather, make a sound, resembling low hum of jet aircraft. There are only four known dunes in the world with such phenomenon. Unlike most of sand dunes, this one does not change its location or form, stays in hollow between mountain ranges, which creating special wind rose.
The word “Katutau” translates as “harsh mountains”. This is a very old, badly eroded mountains exists of volcanic rocks. Volcanic rock is very brittle and easily shatters by physical impact. Water, time and wind carved in the rock bizarre shapes.
Sedimentary rocks of ancient Tethys Ocean are preserved in some places; typical narrow gorges in the central part of the range are quite steep.
The vegetation has typical desert character. Some desert species of birds, animals are found here.
Aktau is a small mountain massif, which is located in the eastern part of park. Its origin is connected with the raising of land area that is a long time ago – back in the Cretaceous period, was the bottom of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Before lifting and draining of land, sea currents, connecting and intertwining with each other, lowered portable terrestrial rocks of different composition and density to the bottom. Over millions of years after the retreat of the ocean, the water and wind have washed and weathered weak rock, erecting of the remaining species whimsical shapes and compositions. The whole landscape of Aktau Mountains is so unusual and fantastic, that it feels like another planet. It’s impossible to describe the beauty of the Aktau Mountains. It’s definitely should be visited and seen by own eyes.
